History

Evidence of the Glatz family in Garmisch dates back to 1550 at the latest.

Christoph Glatz (+1653), a mason by profession, is the first director ancestor mentioned. His son Martin, also a mason, uses the occupational title as the house name too. One of his sons dies in Venice in 1674, he was probably working there as one of the highly respected craftsmen from Werdenfels.

The family’s house name today, “Hoariger”, can be traced back to the Christian name of Heinrich Glatz (+1804), a 2nd generation cooper (barrel maker), who was also called “Traister”. His children were already called “Hainriger”, which finally developed into “Hoariger”.

The family's home changed every one to two generations in the 17th and 18th century, which was not unusual at that time as families often swapped houses or the sons married into different houses.

Andreas Glatz (*1767) finally acquired the property at Von-Müller-Straße 3 in 1840; the farm is still owned by his descendants today. 
Josef Glatz (1868-1941) builds an agricultural property for himself and his family at Rießerseestraße 3 in 1903, where rooms were also rented out to summer visitors soon. “Villa Glatz”, as it was called on postcards at that time, served as a home to four generations of the family. The large covered outdoor seating area where people met for coffee a hundred years ago and the enclosed glass veranda that offered a view of the mountains regardless of the weather were popular with the house’s residents and guests.
The house had to be demolished in 2017 as a result of the poor building structure. The 4th and 5th generation of the Simon family who runs the property opted for a new building. This is to meet the requirements of the modern day and the property and family’s history.
To tie in with the house’s history, the owners decided to continue the over a hundred years of hospitality and still enable many guests to enjoy an unforgettable, successful stay in Garmisch.
